Do I need experience to start BJJ?

+

No, you don't.

BJJ and no-gi can be started with no prior experience at all. The beginner course covers the fundamentals, safe training, and consideration for others.

After the first week of the beginner course you can also join fundamentals classes. After the course, all coached sessions are open to you.

After the course you can also train on your own at the gym outside of coached sessions.

You can sign up for the beginner course.

What is the difference between BJJ and no-gi?

+

BJJ (Brazilian jiu-jitsu) and no-gi are very close to each other, and the biggest difference is the training attire.

BJJ is trained in a gi: a traditional, judo-style training uniform. The gi allows grips on sleeves, collars, and pants, which opens up different ways to control your opponent and submit them with chokes or joint locks.

No-gi is practiced without the gi, and you can't grip your opponent's clothing. This changes both the control grips and the submissions, even though the underlying principles are the same as in BJJ.

You don't need a gi for your first classes.
